Discover Q4 2026 categories: restaurants, entertainment and utilities

From Oct. 1 through Dec. 31, activated cardholders earn 5% at Restaurants, Entertainment and Utilities on up to $1,500 in combined purchases. Each category does not receive a separate cap; the standard quarterly maximum remains $75.

  • Restaurants: generally full-service restaurants, cafes, fast food and caterers; hotel or retail-store restaurants and some bakeries may not qualify.
  • Entertainment: generally movie theaters, live events, sports promoters, amusement parks, zoos and similar direct purchases; third-party tickets, travel-coded packages and streaming are commonly excluded.
  • Utilities: generally residential electric, gas and water service plus internet, cable and phone bills paid online or by phone; landlord, property-manager and HOA payments may not qualify.
Activate before spending

Discover activation is generally not retroactive. Merchant category codes and transaction data control, so check the posted reward in your account.

Q3 remains available through September 30

The current quarter covers gas stations and public EV charging, flights and public transportation, and drugstores under the same combined $1,500 cap. Travel agencies, third-party booking sites, rental cars, cruises, rideshare, parking and tolls may not fall under this quarter's transportation definition.

How Cashback Match works

Discover automatically matches all cash back earned from approval through the first 365 days, with no match limit or purchase minimum. The match normally arrives within two billing periods after the period ends. Earn $300 during the eligible year, for example, and the match would add another $300 if all rewards qualify.

This is not an instant 10% rate or a traditional up-front welcome bonus. Rewards processed after the period, statement credits, closed accounts and other exclusions are governed by Discover's terms.

Before you apply

  1. Activate the 5% categories every quarter.
  2. The $1,500 cap is shared across all listed categories for the quarter.
  3. Merchant coding and third-party wallets can affect bonus eligibility.
  4. Cashback Match posts after the first 365 days; do not treat it as instant 10% back.
  5. The intro APR ends, and balance transfers may carry a fee. Read the final application terms.
  6. Checking pre-approval does not affect your credit score, but a full application may result in a hard inquiry.
  7. No foreign transaction fee does not guarantee broad international acceptance; carry a backup card.
  8. Discover and Capital One are integrating systems, so your account terms and app are the final authority.

Drawbacks

  • Ongoing maintenance: activate and track a new set of categories each quarter.
  • Limited quarterly cap: only the first $1,500 in combined category spending earns 5%.

Bottom line

Discover it combines no annual fee, planned 5% quarters and first-year Cashback Match. It can be a strong piece of a cash-back setup when categories line up; people who want zero maintenance or reliable global acceptance should pair it with another card.
